A security guard stationed at the Permanent Site of Ebonyi State University (EBSU), Ezzamgbo, in Ohaukwu Local Government Area, has reportedly died after being severely beaten by his colleagues over allegations of theft.
The deceased, Ebube Igboke, a native of Ezzama in Ezza South Local Government Area, was employed by Middle Pillar Security, a private firm contracted by the university.
Confirming the incident, Ebonyi State Police Public Relations Officer, Joshua Ukandu, stated that three suspects have been arrested in connection with the case.
“They claimed to have apprehended a suspect stealing at EBSU’s permanent site. Instead of turning him over to law enforcement, they took matters into their own hands and assaulted him. Though he survived initially, they later decided to take him to the police. The officers directed them to seek medical attention for him, but he was pronounced dead at the hospital,” Ukandu explained.
The victim’s family has since petitioned the Ebonyi State Commissioner of Police, Adaku Uche-Anya, demanding justice for Igboke. Their lawyer, D. I. Njoku, alleged that the deceased was brutally beaten and later taken to the state police headquarters by those responsible.
The family further accused the security firm of preventing Igboke’s fiancée, Oluomachi, who also works for Middle Pillar Security, from taking him to the hospital when she was informed of the attack.
They are now calling on law enforcement authorities to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
