Ebonyi Traditional Rulers Attend Chief Odum’s Burial in Cross River as Efforts to Restore Peace Intensify

Date:

Ebonyi traditional rulers recently attended the funeral of HRH Chief Stephen Ubiet Odum in Cross River, marking a significant step toward reconciliation between the Mfuma and Ukelle communities. This gathering, aimed at fostering peace, comes amid a long-standing land dispute between the Izzi people of Ebonyi and the Ukelle of Cross River.

The late HRH Ubiet Stephen Ekwok Odum, a respected leader from the Ntrigom Clan, was born in 1945 and passed away in 2025. Despite past tensions, HRH Eze John Nwenyi of Ndubia Autonomous Community and Chief Clament Eze of Iphu-Igwe Autonomous Community honored his legacy by attending the funeral.

Key stakeholders are actively working to restore harmony, advocating for the Izzi people’s return to the Mfuma Community. This effort aligns with broader peace initiatives across the Ebonyi-Cross River border region.

During the ceremony, the visiting traditional rulers upheld Izzi customs by presenting yams, wrappers, drinks, and an undisclosed sum to Chief Odum’s eldest son. Their presence symbolized a renewed commitment to peace and unity.

Speaking at the event, Barrister Pascal Nwenyi, President of the Ebonyi/Cross River Peace Movement, described Chief Odum’s passing as a profound loss, emphasizing that many in the Ukelle community relied on his guidance. He also extended financial support to the bereaved family.

Though local government chairmen from Izzi and Yala were expected to attend, their absence did not overshadow the strong message of unity delivered by key dignitaries. Those in attendance included Senator Agom Jarigbe, Business Mogul Azubike Daniel (Zubitech Global), Igwe Zeal Uchenna (Moneybag), and Chief Emmanuel Onele. These figures urged for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflicts and encouraged both communities to embrace dialogue.

Chief Odum, who assumed leadership of Ipollo Village in 2002 and later became Clan Head of Ntrigom, left behind a legacy of leadership and community service. His funeral not only honored his life but also paved the way for renewed cooperation between Ebonyi and Cross River States.
