On this International Women’s Day, we celebrate the remarkable contributions of women in Ebonyi State, Nigeria, who have been instrumental in driving positive change and fostering development across various sectors.
First Lady of Ebonyi State: Mrs. Mary-Maudline Nwifuru
Mrs. Mary-Maudline Nwifuru, the First Lady of Ebonyi State, has been a beacon of empowerment and compassion. Through her Better Health for Rural Women, Children, and Internally Displaced Persons Foundation (BERWO), she has initiated several programs aimed at uplifting the underprivileged. In 2024, she empowered 195 women and youths with skills in information and communication technology (ICT), fashion design, and more, providing them with essential tools to enhance their livelihoods.
Demonstrating her commitment to inclusive education, Mrs. Nwifuru announced a monthly donation of N500,000 to support visually impaired students at the State Special School in Opefia, Izzi Local Government Area, ensuring they receive quality education and care. In recognition of her dedication to women’s and children’s development, UNESCO’s Spotlight Initiative appointed her as its Ambassador for Ebonyi State in July 2023.
Mrs. Patricia Obila: Trailblazing Leadership

In May 2023, Mrs. Patricia Obila made history by becoming the first female Deputy Governor of Ebonyi State. A native of Nkpoghoro, Afikpo, she previously served two terms as the Vice Chairman of Afikpo North Local Government Area, showcasing her dedication to public service and community development.
Mrs. Elizabeth Ogbaga: Champion for Women’s Empowerment

Mrs. Elizabeth Ogbaga, a lawyer and registered nurse, has been a prominent figure in Ebonyi State’s political landscape. She served as a member of the House of Representatives from 2007, representing the Ebonyi/Ohaukwu federal constituency, and later as the Honourable Commissioner of Commerce and Industry. During her tenure, she facilitated various projects, including the establishment of oxygen plants and mammogram machines at the Federal Medical Centre in Abakaliki, construction of National Health Care Centres, and the training of over 50 youths in ICT, providing them with computers and accessories.
Professor Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo: Literary Luminary

Professor Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo is a distinguished scholar at Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike (AE-FUNAI). Her extensive career in literature and academia has significantly contributed to Nigerian and African literary landscapes. She has received numerous accolades, including the ANA/Spectrum Prize for fiction and the Zulu Sofola Prize for Women Writing. Her novel “House of Symbols” was selected as one of the 25 Best Books written over 25 years (1978–2003) by Spectrum Books, Ibadan. In 2007, she was a joint winner of The Nigeria Prize for Literature in the children’s literature category with her novel “My Cousin Sammy”. Professor Adimora-Ezeigbo’s dedication to literature and education continues to inspire many within and beyond Nigeria.
