AE-FUNAI Leads Campaign for Sustainable Plastic Waste Management in Ebonyi

Date:

Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike (AE-FUNAI) has intensified efforts to combat plastic waste pollution by hosting a one-day workshop on February 27, 2025. The event, organized in collaboration with the French Embassy Fund (FEF 209), focused on promoting sustainable plastic waste management through reduction, reuse, and recycling.

Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Romanus Ejiagu emphasized the environmental and health risks of improper plastic disposal. Key speakers, including Prof. Robert Onyeneke, Dr. Friday Achibong, and NESREA’s Austin Nwanuforo, called for increased awareness, policy enforcement, and investment in waste recycling initiatives.

A major concern raised was the incomplete Ebonyi State Waste Recycling Plant, initially launched under former Governor Martin Elechi and continued by David Umahi. Stakeholders urged the Francis Nwifuru administration to fast-track its completion to enhance waste-to-wealth initiatives in the state.

With the right policies, investment, and public participation, Ebonyi State can transform plastic waste management into an opportunity for economic growth and environmental sustainability.

What steps do you think Ebonyi should take to improve waste management? Share your thoughts in the comments!
