Significant changes have been noted in the state’s transport network, with improvements in road accessibility and state-of-the-art infrastructure in Ebonyi State. These new roads aim to reduce poverty by supporting agricultural growth and mining, which, in turn, will boost the state’s economy and encourage interstate trade.
The government of His Excellency, Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, recognized roads and infrastructure as a weak point. In his 22 months as governor, he has worked towards addressing this issue. Gov. Nwifuru, who, before the 2023 elections, promised to make commendable changes in infrastructure among other sectors, has collaborated with his commissioners to achieve some of these goals.
The Commissioner for Works, Engr. Stanley Mbam, speaking with TVC News in December, highlighted the positive progress made in road and infrastructural development. He stated that the reconstruction and supply of electricity to the Ebonyi State Ring Roads—including the Afikpo North, Onueke-Nwezenyi, and Ndoko-Ezzamgbo roads—are ongoing. Other projects include the construction of a pedestrian bridge at FETHA II Gate and a dual overhead carriageway at Vanco Junction. The commissioner also noted the maintenance of some sound infrastructure from the previous administration. https://www.facebook.com/100069054122333/posts/pfbid028cNYBfJPrw68vhmZ9XWeFRyH9gnaogmnxmwWc6chmxPwoU4XUKRytowTsnPnjN8l/?app=fbl
Furthermore, development efforts have reached about 62% of the 13 local governments in Ebonyi, ensuring that rural communities are not left behind. Local governments are working closely with the commissioner to contribute their quota.
Beyond roads, a billion-naira loan for public education has led to more classrooms and staff quarters. Health centers are also receiving upgrades with better equipment, addressing Ebonyi’s high maternal and child mortality rates. Delays in road construction, Mbam explained, stem from efforts to accommodate farmers while work progresses.
