Ebonyi, Others Receive UBEC’s N27.8bn Education Fund

Date:

The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has disbursed N27.8 billion to nine states, including Ebonyi, to improve basic education.

UBEC, under the Federal Ministry of Education, ensures the implementation of Universal Basic Education (UBE) programs nationwide. The UBE Act mandates that state governments provide 50% counterpart funding to access their allocations.

Despite this funding, Nigeria’s education sector continues to face challenges such as poor infrastructure and teacher shortages.

Breakdown of Allocations

  • Ebonyi State: N2.6bn (covering 2022 and 2023 balances)
  • Abia State: N4.2bn (for outstanding balances from 2011, 2020, and 2023)
  • Akwa Ibom: N1.3bn (balance for 2023)
  • Enugu & Jigawa: N3.5bn each
  • Kano: N1.7bn (first and second quarters of 2024)
  • Ondo, Sokoto & Yobe: N3.5bn each (for 2024)

Education reform advocate Ayodamola Oluwatoyin has urged state governments to utilize these funds effectively, stressing the need for improved learning conditions.

“Governors must ensure these funds are used to enhance education. Pupils should not be learning under trees while such allocations exist,” he said.
