Ebonyi First Lady Launches Measles and Rubella Awareness Campaign

Date:

The First Lady of Ebonyi State, Mrs. Mary-Maudline Nwifuru, has launched a statewide sensitization campaign against measles and rubella. The initiative, part of the Renewed Hope Initiative led by Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, aims to raise awareness and promote immunization ahead of the nationwide mass vaccination scheduled for October 2025.

Speaking at the campaign kickoff event at the Women Development Center, Abakaliki, Mrs. Nwifuru emphasized the importance of vaccination in preventing measles and rubella. She urged parents and caregivers to ensure their children receive timely immunization, stressing that vaccines save lives.

To enhance outreach, the campaign will leverage radio and television broadcasts, community engagement programs, and grassroots health worker initiatives. The Ebonyi State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Moses Ekuma, highlighted the need for early awareness to combat vaccine hesitancy and ensure full coverage.

World Health Organization (WHO) Surveillance Officer, Dr. Elandi Dadi, noted that measles cases in Ebonyi State have significantly declined due to continuous immunization efforts. He reaffirmed WHO’s commitment to eradicating measles through its 2023–2030 strategic program.

Addressing the medical benefits of vaccination, Dr. Ndidiamaka Lilian Nwaobashi, President of the Medical Women Association of Nigeria, outlined key symptoms of measles, including high fever, rashes, cough, and eye redness. She emphasized that vaccination remains the most effective preventive measure.

According to the Ebonyi State Immunization Officer, Mr. Nwodom Christopher, the state targets vaccinating 352,000 children aged 9–15 months. The sensitization campaign is already underway, with full-scale implementation set for October 2025, aligning with the Federal Government’s nationwide measles and rubella vaccination drive.
