NUT Declares Indefinite Strike in Seven Ebonyi LGAs Over Unpaid Salaries

Date:

The Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) in Ebonyi State has commenced an indefinite strike across seven local government areas due to the non-payment of at least three months’ salaries to some teachers.

In a statement, the union’s secretary, Bassey Asuquo, identified the affected LGAs as Ebonyi, Edda, Ezza South, Ezza North, Ivo, Ishielu, and Ohaukwu.

The statement reads:

“sequel to our earlier notice on mobilization for industrial action, we have reviewed the compliance of local government chairmen in clearing our members’ salaries. While some LGAs have settled their outstanding payments, others have failed to do so.

“As a result, we are declaring an indefinite strike in the following local government areas: Edda, Ebonyi, Ezza South, Ezza North, Ishielu, Ivo, and Ohaukwu.”

The strike takes effect from 12:00 AM on Thursday, February 6, 2025, with all state and branch officers in the affected LGAs directed to enforce compliance through solidarity pickets and monitoring efforts.

The union condemned the failure of the local government authorities to meet their obligations, stressing that they would not back down until all outstanding salaries are paid.

We urge all members to remain resolute and committed to this strike action until our demands are met.”
