The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved the establishment of the Ebonyi State University of ICT, Science, and Technology, Oferekpe.
During the presentation of the recognition letter to Governor Francis Nwifuru on Thursday, NUC Executive Secretary, Prof. Abdullahi Ribadu, confirmed that the university is now the 66th state university in Nigeria and the 278th in the Nigerian University System. The recognition letter will also be sent to JAMB, TETFUND, NYSC, and the Nigerian Education Loan Fund.
However, Prof. Ribadu emphasized that the university’s academic activities would commence only after resource verification. He stated that the Commission would evaluate the university’s facilities, staffing, and infrastructure before granting the go-ahead.
Governor Nwifuru explained that the university, initially announced in 2021, aims to improve access to affordable and quality higher education for Ebonyi State indigenes. He highlighted the government’s commitment to providing funding for the university’s sustainability and shared updates on the ongoing construction of key infrastructure like the Senate Building, Faculty Buildings, and Student Hostels at the campus in Oferekpe, Agbaja, Izzi LGA.
Nwifuru also revealed the launch of the Ebonyi State scholarship program, which is training 1,000 students for Master’s and Doctorate degrees locally and internationally. These graduates will contribute to the state’s tertiary institutions, bolstering human capital development.
