Abakaliki, the capital of Ebonyi State, was filled with excitement as pipe-borne water finally returned after nine years of scarcity. Residents took to the streets in jubilation when they discovered water flowing from their taps, a development many thought was long overdue.
The prolonged lack of public water supply had forced residents to depend on boreholes, wells, and sachet water, often at significant financial and health costs. However, the resumption of water supply, led by Governor Francis Nwifuru’s administration, has brought much-needed relief to the people.
Speaking to Vanguard, several residents expressed their gratitude to the governor. “I’ve spent thousands weekly on water for my household,” said Pastor Kingsley Maduakor. “This intervention is a huge relief. We’re thankful to the governor for addressing this critical issue.”
Others echoed his sentiments, urging the government to sustain the effort. “We appeal to Governor Nwifuru to ensure the steady supply of water to all neighborhoods,” added Joy Ajah, another resident.
The Acting Commissioner of Water Resources, Mr. Franklin Chikaodili Ukah, oversaw the pumping of water from the Ezilo scheme to the Abakaliki reservoir. He noted that the administration is committed to providing potable water to residents, highlighting that additional water schemes in Oferekpe, Ukahu, and Ishiagu are either completed or near completion.
While monitoring water distribution across streets like Ezeobodo, Goddy Ogbaga Avenue, and Udemezue, Ukah urged residents to repair damaged pipes to prevent wastage, warning that defaulters could face penalties for economic sabotage.
As the government works to ensure water reaches all corners of the state, residents remain optimistic that the days of water scarcity are finally behind them.
