A Bold Step for Public Education in Ebonyi

Date:

Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru of Ebonyi State is taking a groundbreaking stance to restore the dignity of public schools and reduce the financial strain on parents.

The governor recently revealed that all five of his children attend schools within the South-East geopolitical zone, with tuition fees not exceeding ₦35,000 per child. This decision challenges the growing trend of relying on expensive private institutions and highlights his commitment to improving public education.

Despite serving 12 years in the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, including eight as Speaker, Nwifuru has opted for a modest lifestyle. His focus on revamping public schools in the state aims to provide quality education for all and eliminate the perception of private schools as a status symbol.

Reflecting on the past, the governor lamented how public schools, once globally competitive, have been neglected, forcing parents to seek alternatives. By equipping public schools to higher standards, Nwifuru hopes to reverse this decline and make quality education accessible to every family in Ebonyi.

The governor’s personal story of starting primary school at age 16 in a community school, combining farming with education, and eventually earning a postgraduate degree abroad, showcases his deep appreciation for education as a transformative tool.

Unlike many leaders who send their children to expensive private institutions or overseas schools, Nwifuru is charting a different path. His decision to keep his children in Nigerian schools while focusing on improving public education underscores his vision for a fair and inclusive system.

This bold initiative promises to ease the financial burden on families and restore confidence in the public education system. It also serves as a call to other leaders to prioritize the needs of the people over personal gain, setting a new benchmark for governance in Nigeria.
