Power Outages Hit Abakaliki as EEDC Reports Vandalism

Date:

Abakaliki residents are grappling with power outages following the vandalism of critical electricity installations in the area. The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) confirmed the incident, citing the theft of an underground cable from the Udemezue 11KV Feeder as the cause of the disruption.

In a statement released by Mr. Emeka Ezeh, EEDC’s Head of Corporate Communications, the affected areas include Oroko-onuoha, Udensi, Kpirikpiri, Ogbaga Road, New Layout, and Hilltop Road, alongside major establishments such as Unity FM, Siren Hotel, and De Pablo Hotel.

Ezeh explained that the vandalism, which occurred around 2:40 a.m., resulted in the loss of approximately 16 meters of armoured underground cable. Consequently, over 70 public and private transformers under the feeder remain without power.

“We deeply regret the inconvenience caused by this unprecedented incident and appeal for patience as we work to replace the stolen and damaged components,” he stated, assuring that repairs were underway to restore electricity supply promptly.

The company reaffirmed its commitment to improving services and called on the public to report any suspicious activities around electricity infrastructure to help curb vandalism.
