Ebonyi Fire Tragedy: NYSC Certificate, Credentials, and Livelihood Lost

Date:

A raging fire on Thursday consumed a large building in Nwiboko, Ishieke, located in Ebonyi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, leaving residents devastated and homeless.

Among the victims was Esther Nwokoro, who recounted the heartbreaking loss of all her belongings, including her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) discharge certificate and academic credentials spanning from primary school to university.

“I’ve lost everything—my certificates, the clothes I sell, my personal belongings, wigs, and shoes. My NYSC certificate, which I worked so hard to earn, has been reduced to ashes. I’m now homeless, and I don’t know how to go on,” she said.

Esther described her struggle to complete her education after her sponsor withdrew financial support during her second year in university. She persevered through various legitimate jobs to graduate.

She was away celebrating the New Year in her village when she received a call on January 2, informing her that her home had been destroyed by fire. “I feel utterly helpless and hopeless. Where do I begin again? God, why me?” she lamented.
