Ebonyi Begins Construction of 24km NIGERCEM Road to Boost Economic Growth

Date:

The long-awaited construction of a 24km road linking the defunct Nigeria Cement Company (NIGERCEM) has officially commenced in Ebonyi State.

The project, which starts at Umuogudu Oshia, Ngbo in Ohaukwu Local Government Area, extends to Ehamufu in Enugu State. Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, represented by Deputy Governor Patricia Obila, flagged off the project, emphasizing its significance for economic development and regional connectivity.

The governor assured that the road would be completed within 18 months and highlighted plans to revitalize the NIGERCEM factory, promising employment opportunities for residents.

“When completed, this road will not only connect Ebonyi and Enugu States but also provide a direct route to Abuja. Reviving NIGERCEM will create jobs, and we’ll also ensure essential amenities like electricity and water are provided,” Nwifuru stated.

Deputy Speaker Hon. Chinedu Onah noted that the road would significantly boost economic activities in the Ngbo community, which had long awaited its construction. Commissioner for Works, Lebechi Mbam, warned against theft of construction materials, stressing the importance of community cooperation for the project’s success.

“This road is designed with durability in mind, featuring a six-inch rigid pavement. Any issues with theft will result in the project’s termination,” Mbam cautioned.

Regent Uche Ali Ega of Umuogudu Oshia praised the initiative, describing the road as crucial for linking Ohaukwu and Ishielu Local Government Areas and serving as a shorter route to Enugu and Nsukka. However, he appealed for the restoration of electricity, which has been absent in the community for over a decade, calling it a key need alongside the road project.
