Contractors handling school building projects in Ebonyi State have been cautioned to meet specified standards or face legal repercussions.
This warning came from the Ebonyi State House of Assembly Joint Committees on Education, and Projects Monitoring and Evaluation during a recent inspection. Hon. Oluchukwu Ukie Ezeali, Chair of the Projects Monitoring and Evaluation Committee and representative of Afikpo North East Constituency, expressed concern over substandard work, particularly at Comprehensive Secondary School, Uwana in Afikpo North Local Government Area.
Ezeali noted the lack of professionalism among some contractors and criticized their failure to employ qualified engineers. He stressed that such negligence would not be tolerated, adding that contractors must expedite their work to ensure completion by the second quarter of 2025.
Meanwhile, Hon. Barr. Aloysius Nwodo, Chair of the House Committee on Education and representative of Ebonyi North West Constituency, praised the quality of construction at Izzo High School, Ndiaguazu Umuoghara, and Kpakpaji High School, Ezzama. He highlighted these projects as benchmarks for others to follow.
However, Nwodo also pointed out delays and poor execution at St. Andians Secondary School, Umuezeoka, and Unwana Comprehensive Secondary School, urging the contractors involved to improve immediately and adhere to specifications.
