Comrade Richard Nwafor, the Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State, has urged former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to abandon any plans of contesting the 2027 presidential election. He emphasized the need for fresh leadership within the party and advocated for the PDP’s presidential ticket to be zoned to the southern region.
Speaking during a press briefing in Abakaliki, Comrade Nwafor criticized Atiku’s rumored attempts to form an alliance with Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, arguing that such efforts were unnecessary given their previous lack of success. He highlighted that Atiku, despite having contested in several presidential elections, failed to win in 2023, even after selecting Obi as his running mate in an earlier election.
Comrade Nwafor expressed confusion over Atiku’s speculated ambitions and reminded that many southern PDP members had pushed for the presidential ticket to be zoned to the south in 2023, emphasizing equity and fairness. He urged Atiku to support a southern candidate in 2027 instead of pursuing another bid or repeating alliances that had proven unfruitful in the past.
“This is a personal opinion and does not reflect the position of my office. I appeal to those close to Atiku to convey this message—our great party needs new leadership for the 2027 elections,” Comrade Nwafor concluded.
