Workers in Ebonyi State are set to resume duties as the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) suspended its one-week warning strike. The industrial action was launched to protest the state government’s failure to fully implement the national minimum wage.
Following a review of the strike, which ended on Sunday, December 8, 2024, the NLC commended the state government for engaging in continuous negotiations. The union confirmed that talks had been ongoing since December 7, with the government demonstrating a commitment to addressing workers’ concerns and presenting verifiable evidence during discussions.
Governor Francis Nwifuru appealed to the NLC to temporarily accept the current salary payment structure for October and November 2024 while a review is conducted based on the state’s financial capacity. The governor reiterated his commitment to improving workers’ welfare.
The NLC, while appreciating the solidarity of Ebonyi workers during the strike, resolved to suspend the action and continue negotiations to align salaries with the provisions of the new minimum wage act.
