Following up on the recent coverage of the land dispute between Umobor Village in Akaeze and Ogwor Village in Ishiagu, the Ebonyi State Commissioner for Border, Peace, and Conflict Resolution, Dr. Donatus Ilang, has called for an urgent ceasefire. His appeal comes as part of ongoing efforts to bring resolution to the tensions between the two communities.
Dr. Ilang conducted a fact-finding mission to the disputed area, aiming to verify both parties’ claims regarding the boundaries and create a map to aid reconciliation. During the visit, he expressed disappointment that representatives from Umobor Village failed to attend, despite invitations sent through the local government and peace committees. On a positive note, he commended the cooperation shown by the Ogwor community.
In addition to calling for an immediate ceasefire, Dr. Ilang condemned the violence and destruction caused by the dispute, warning that those responsible for any killings or property damage would face penalties. His message also targeted the youth, urging them to adopt peaceful resolutions and follow the example set by Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, who has been a proponent of peace and development in the state.
The commissioner concluded by emphasizing that without peace, the region’s development would be hindered. He reinforced the importance of dialogue and cooperation, stressing that the state’s Ministry of Border, Peace, and Conflict Resolution is dedicated to ensuring peaceful coexistence among communities in Ebonyi State.
