Governor Nwifuru Pledges Ongoing Support in Lassa Fever Fight

Date:

Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has reported that the state has recorded 23 fatalities and 48 confirmed cases of Lassa fever throughout the year 2024.

In his address, Governor Nwifuru shared that 25 individuals infected with the disease have been successfully treated and discharged. He expressed his sorrow over the loss of lives and acknowledged the critical role played by Doctors Without Borders (MSF) in saving the lives of those who survived.

The announcement was made during the formal handover of MSF’s Lassa fever support operations to Ebonyi State’s Ministry of Health. Governor Nwifuru voiced his concerns regarding the high fatality rate of Lassa fever, not only in Ebonyi but also across the country.

Gratitude to MSF’s Humanitarian Contributions

“The humanitarian contributions of MSF in enhancing the health and well-being of our people in Ebonyi are nothing short of extraordinary. As a government, we are deeply indebted to them for their invaluable assistance. Today, we come together to honor MSF for their remarkable work,” Governor Nwifuru said.

MSF has been collaborating with Ebonyi State since 2018, providing vital support in areas such as disease surveillance, diagnosis, case management, prevention, and control measures for Lassa fever, along with essential humanitarian aid.

The Endemic Nature of Lassa Fever in Ebonyi

Lassa fever, caused by the Lassa virus, is a viral hemorrhagic fever primarily transmitted by multi-mammate rats. Due to Ebonyi’s tropical climate and abundant forests, where these rat species and the virus reservoirs thrive, the disease remains endemic in Nigeria and parts of Sub-Saharan Africa. It tends to occur in outbreaks, especially during peak seasons from December to April.

Challenges Contributing to the Spread of Lassa Fever

Governor Nwifuru pointed out several challenges contributing to the spread of Lassa fever, including poor health-seeking behavior, inadequate environmental sanitation, lack of public awareness, and limited community engagement. He reaffirmed the commitment of his administration to improving healthcare in the state, particularly concerning life-threatening diseases such as Lassa fever and cholera.

Government Initiatives to Improve Healthcare

The governor also outlined his administration’s efforts to bolster healthcare services in the state, including the employment of qualified medical personnel, procurement of modern medical equipment, and the revitalization of 171 primary healthcare centers across Ebonyi. Additionally, new ambulances, motorcycles for primary healthcare officers, and SUVs for doctors at general hospitals have been provided to improve healthcare delivery.

“I assure you that we will continue to offer every support necessary to achieve our healthcare objectives and ensure the well-being of Ebonyi’s citizens,” Governor Nwifuru concluded.
