Numerous significant figures within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State have chosen to step down from their involvement with the party. According to reports, Senator Anyim Pius, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, and Senator Obinna Ogba, a former governorship aspirant of the PDP, are among those who have left the party.
In his resignation letter dated October 27, Hon. Livinus Makwe, a close associate of Anyim and a former member representing Ohaozara, Onicha, and Ivo Federal Constituency in the Ninth Assembly, cited personal reasons for his decision. In the letter addressed to his PDP ward chairman, Makwe conveyed his resignation as follows:
“I am writing to inform you that I have decided, due to personal reasons, to resign from the Peoples’ Democratic Party after consulting with my followers, supporters, and well-wishers within the party. Consequently, I hereby resign my membership from the Peoples’ Democratic Party, effective from October 27, 2023. The National Chairman of PDP, National Vice Chairman PDP (South East), Ebonyi State PDP Chairman, and Ive LGA PDP chairman have also been duly informed of this decision through copies of this letter.”
He expressed gratitude for the opportunities the party provided, especially during his service as a member of the 9th House of Representatives, and hoped for a positive reception of his resignation by the party and its members.
Makwe’s departure from the PDP was accompanied by the resignation of over 1,000 supporters who were also loyal to the former SGF. Additionally, six local government chairmen of the party, including Mr. Agbom Friday (Ezza south), Mr. Nwofe Philip (lzzi), Mr. Nwobasi Ude (Ohaozara), Mr. Chukwu Micheal (Ivo), Mr. Ifere Sunday Bright (lkwo), and Mr. Ndukwe Orji Okam (Afikpo south), have also chosen to resign from the PDP.
A source within the PDP has indicated that more stakeholders are expected to submit their resignation letters from the party in the coming days. However, efforts to contact the state caretaker chairman of the party, Mr. Augustine Nwazunku, were unsuccessful as he had turned off his phone when approached with the inquiry.
In the meantime, the Ebonyi State Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Mr. Chidi Ogbuatu, characterized the wave of resignations within the PDP as positive news for his own party.
