EBSU to Withdraw 72 Medical Laboratory Science Students Over Low CGPA, 10 Placed on Academic Probation

Date:

The Department of Medical Laboratory Science at Ebonyi State University (EBSU) has recommended the withdrawal of 72 undergraduate students due to poor academic performance, while 10 others have been placed on academic probation.

According to an official memo issued by the Head of Department, Dr. Victor Usanga, and obtained in Abakaliki, the affected students include 41 in 100-level and 31 in 200-level who failed to meet the minimum academic requirements.

The document further revealed that eight students in 300-level and two in 400-level have been placed on probation following a review of their academic records.

The report indicated that many of the students listed for withdrawal recorded Cumulative Grade Point Averages (CGPAs) ranging between 0.00 and 2.44, falling short of the department’s approved benchmark for progression in the Medical Laboratory Science programme.

Reacting to the development, the Students’ Union Government (SUG) of EBSU expressed concern over the release of the withdrawal list.

SUG President, Chika Abraham Nwuhuo, acknowledged the authority of the university management to uphold academic standards and discipline but stressed the need for fairness, transparency, and strict adherence to due process.

He noted that there were credible concerns suggesting that some of the affected students had not been given adequate access to verify or properly review their results before the publication of the withdrawal notice.

The union therefore called on the institution to ensure comprehensive result verification and administrative transparency before final approval or public release of any withdrawal decisions.

According to the SUG leadership, decisions with significant academic consequences must be guided by procedural integrity, equity, and clarity.

The student body also urged those affected to remain calm and law-abiding, assuring them that constructive dialogue with the university authorities was ongoing through established institutional channels.

The SUG reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding students’ academic rights, welfare, and dignity, emphasizing that every student deserves fairness in matters concerning academic progression and disciplinary measures.
