UK-Based Lecturer Donates Laptops, ₦1 Million to Ebonyi Teachers, Advocates Better Welfare

Date:

A United Kingdom-based Nigerian academic, Dr. Obinna Otuu, has donated laptops and cash gifts to teachers in Ebonyi State, emphasizing the need for improved teachers’ welfare and investment in education.

Dr. Otuu, a Computer Science lecturer at Swansea University, UK, made the donation during a meeting themed “Ebonyi Teachers First” held in Abakaliki, the state capital. The event brought together educators and education stakeholders from across the state.

Speaking at the occasion, Dr. Otuu highlighted the importance of empowering teachers to achieve quality education in Nigeria.

“Teachers deserve the basic necessities of life — food, clothing, and shelter. How many can boast of owning a home or land despite years of service?” he asked.

The UK-based scholar described teachers as the “driving force and brain box of society”, stressing that no nation could achieve educational excellence without prioritizing their welfare.

As part of his contribution, Dr. Otuu presented ₦1 million to Mrs. Alice Awaza, the oldest teacher at the event, who has served for 32 years at Ohofia Community Primary School, Ukawu, in Onicha Local Government Area. Additionally, nine other teachers received HP laptops each to support digital teaching and learning in their schools.

In his remarks, Prof. Daniel Nwibo, Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Ebonyi State University, commended the gesture, describing teachers as the builders of society who deserve better working conditions.

Also speaking, Prof. Godwin Onu of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, emphasized the role of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in improving education in Nigeria. He called on government and stakeholders to equip teachers with ICT skills to meet global teaching standards.

“ICT makes learning easier and connects teachers and students to global knowledge. Nigeria must invest more in digital education,” he said.

Expressing her gratitude, Mrs. Awaza thanked Dr. Otuu and the organisers for recognising rural educators, urging continued support for teacher training and capacity building.

The initiative, according to Dr. Otuu, is part of his broader effort to support education and inspire excellence among teachers in his home state.
