The Ebonyi Central Children’s Parliament has called on the government to take immediate action in upgrading libraries and laboratories in public schools across the region.
Meeting at the Ezza North Legislative Council Chamber, Ebiaji, the young parliamentarians highlighted the pressing need for well-equipped learning facilities to enhance practical education and research.
Key Concerns and Recommendations
- Revamping School Facilities: The parliament stressed that outdated and poorly maintained laboratories and libraries hinder students’ academic growth and innovation.
- Strengthening School Security: A lack of infrastructure and safety measures in schools has been linked to increased cases of cultism and other societal issues affecting children.
- Enhancing Healthcare for Children: They urged the government to establish more child-focused hospitals, boost security at medical centers, and eliminate counterfeit drugs to reduce child mortality rates.
- Fighting Child Exploitation: The parliament called for stricter laws against child labor, trafficking, and early or forced marriages, advocating for increased public awareness and enforcement of protective policies.
The session was facilitated by the Human Rights and Conflict Resolution Centre (HRCRC) with backing from the Saint Patrick’s Missionary Society. Speaking at the event, HRCRC’s Executive Director, George Etamesor, emphasized the importance of empowering children to voice their concerns and actively participate in shaping policies that affect their future.
Meanwhile, Gift Ndukwe, a representative from the Ebonyi State Ministry of Women Affairs, commended the initiative and encouraged the young parliamentarians to continue advocating for their rights.
Local government representatives also pledged to escalate the parliament’s resolutions to relevant authorities for necessary action.
