Ebonyi Police Mark 70 Years of Women in Policing, Renew Call to End Gender-Based Violence

Date:

The Ebonyi State Police Command has raised fresh concerns over the increasing cases of gender-based violence (GBV), human trafficking, and other related crimes across Nigeria. The Command made this known in Abakaliki during a 70th anniversary march celebrating women in the Nigeria Police Force.

Female police officers in Ebonyi State took to major streets in Abakaliki, advocating for an end to corruption, domestic violence, child abuse, drug abuse, drug trafficking, and female genital mutilation (FGM), among other forms of social injustice.

Leading the march, the Ebonyi Commissioner of Police, CP Adaku Uche-Anya, noted that women have played vital roles in the Nigeria Police Force since their official enlistment in 1955.

“Today, November 29, we join the nation in celebrating seven decades of women’s service and commitment to strengthening security in Nigeria,” she said.

Also speaking, ACP Bridget Onukaogu, Coordinator of the Nigeria Women Police (NIWOPOL) in the Command, appreciated the support of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, for prioritising female officers and advancing gender equality in the force. She also commended AIG Aisha Abubakar and CP Uche-Anya for their leadership in promoting women’s empowerment in policing.

The awareness march concluded at Udensi Roundabout in Abakaliki. Activities lined up for the anniversary include a Community and Career Outreach on December 3 and a Women Police Symposium scheduled for December 5.
