The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused Nigerian governors of withholding federal allocations meant for grassroots development, alleging massive corruption and abuse of power at the state level.
Speaking at the ADC Leadership Summit in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, Chief Ralph Nwosu, former national chairman of the ADC, claimed that governors across Nigeria are diverting local government funds, imposing excessive taxation, and undermining democratic principles.
According to Nwosu, each local government receives between ₦300 million and ₦600 million monthly, but governors allegedly release only ₦5 million to ₦10 million to chairmen while siphoning the rest. He emphasized that in Ebonyi alone, with 13 councils, billions of naira are mismanaged monthly.
Describing Nigeria as being in “intensive care” due to corruption and tyranny, Nwosu vowed that an ADC-led coalition would “rescue Nigeria” in the 2027 general elections through leadership rooted in service, transparency, and accountability.
He warned that state governors have turned political power into a tool of oppression, thereby weakening the democratic process. “Governors were given the opportunity to lead, but instead of strengthening democracy, they are destroying it. A new leadership with integrity and selflessness is coming in 2027,” Nwosu declared.
Echoing his concerns, Ebonyi ADC chairperson, Comrade Jennifer Adibe-Nwafor, condemned the harassment and arrest of ADC members ahead of the summit. She stressed that such intimidation is a direct attack on democracy, adding that the party maintains active structures across all 13 LGAs and 171 wards in Ebonyi State.
ADC National Financial Secretary, Muhammad Akibu Dahaltu, also criticized the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for using intimidation tactics against opposition parties. He insisted that Nigerians, exhausted by years of hardship, will not return the APC to power in 2027.
The ADC leadership reaffirmed its commitment to contesting strongly in the 2027 elections, positioning itself as a credible alternative to rescue Nigeria from corruption, poor governance, and mismanagement of local government funds.
