Acting Governor of Ebonyi State, Princess Patricia Obila, has ordered the arrest of contractors handling the Amaeze/Izzo Housing Estate project over alleged use of substandard materials and poor-quality work.
During an inspection tour on Tuesday, Obila expressed deep dissatisfaction with the state of the housing project, lamenting that despite huge government investment, the buildings were already showing signs of collapse even before completion.
“This project was supposed to be completed and commissioned this month. Look at the structures—no one has moved in, yet cracks are already visible. With all the funds committed here, should residents move in only for the houses to start collapsing within six months? Get me the full list of the contractors; they will be arrested,” she declared.
The acting governor, who was accompanied by senior government officials, also inspected 19 other projects across Ishielu, Ohaukwu, and Abakaliki local government areas. Some of the projects visited included the 22-classroom block at Girls High School, Ezillo, the 24km Ezillo–Ezzagu Road, the Industrial City Project at Ezzamgbo, and the installation of new machines at the Pipe Production Company, Ezzamgbo.
While condemning contractors who delivered substandard projects, Obila commended those showing commitment to quality work. She, however, urged others to expedite action to ensure projects are delivered on time for commissioning under the People’s Charter of Needs administration led by Governor Francis Nwifuru.
Speaking to journalist, former Speaker of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Hon. Augustine Nwankwagu, advised the government to not only revoke contracts from defaulting contractors but also prosecute them to serve as a deterrent to others engaging in shoddy construction.
