The former governorship candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) in Ebonyi State, Dr. Sunday Andrew Opoke, has warned that Nigeria risks a popular revolt if leaders continue to fail in delivering governance.
Opoke, who also serves as the National Coordinator of the National Coalition Alliance (NCA), said discontent across the country is growing due to worsening hunger, insecurity, and collapsed infrastructure.
Speaking in Abakaliki during an exclusive interview, the Ebonyi politician declared:
“If those in power refuse to provide governance, people may rise in revolution. The signs of discontent are clear. Our mission is simple: rescue Nigeria from hunger, insecurity, and corruption, and replace them with genuine good governance.”
Opoke lamented that Nigeria has been plunged into what he described as “a dark age,” with no clear direction in leadership. He decried a situation where citizens pray for basic amenities such as water, education, healthcare, and roads — services freely provided in many countries.
“Even ministers of health cannot use Nigerian hospitals. That is total collapse,” he said.
The former YPP candidate noted that many public schools have been abandoned, citing New Layout Primary School in Abakaliki, which he said has now turned into farmland. He also criticized the collapse of water supply schemes such as Azuiyiokwu and Juju Hill in Abakaliki, stressing that government neglect has worsened access to clean water nationwide.
Opoke revealed that the National Coalition Alliance, in partnership with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and other stakeholders, is building a broad platform to challenge bad governance ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He stressed that the coalition’s agenda is anchored on a Roadmap to Good Governance, focusing on:
- Harnessing Nigeria’s human capital in sports, technology, and enterprise
- Driving wealth creation through a 24-hour economy
- Expanding civic education and citizens’ access to leaders
- Establishing rural “smart hubs” for education, electricity, and technology
- Promoting professionalism and expertise in governance
He announced that on September 26, the coalition will unveil the roadmap at the People’s Club in Abakaliki, describing it as a “practical template” to reposition Nigeria.
While acknowledging that previous coalitions produced the ruling APC government in 2015, Opoke insisted that Nigerians must not give up on reform efforts.
“Nobody gets tired of going home. If one coalition fails, another will emerge until good governance is achieved,” he said.
Opoke maintained that the coalition’s ultimate goal is to rescue Nigeria from systemic collapse and restore hope to citizens.
