Governor Francis Nwifuru has urged the athletes representing Ebonyi State at the 22nd National Sports Festival in Abeokuta to let their performance speak louder than praise.
Represented by Mr. Hillary Obiesie, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports, the governor addressed the state’s 91-man contingent during a formal send-off. He encouraged the athletes to uphold discipline, unity, and the state’s image throughout the competition.
“You are not just athletes; you are ambassadors of Ebonyi. Promote the image of the state. Make discipline and unity your watchwords, on and off the field,” he stated. “Walk tall, act right, and may God crown your efforts with success.”
He reiterated his administration’s commitment to youth development through sports, describing it as a powerful tool for empowerment and excellence.
“We will continue to provide platforms for our youths to compete and thrive in sports alongside their peers across the nation,” Nwifuru said. “I also commend our sports officials for their relentless efforts to ensure Ebonyi shines at this and other events.”
Mr. Emmanuel Utobo, Director of Sports at the Ebonyi State Sports Council and Chairman of the All Directors of Sports Forum in Nigeria, noted that the team is prepared to compete in 11 events, including athletics, taekwondo, and cricket.
He highlighted the training efforts, mentioning that the para-athletes underwent closed-camp sessions while others were engaged in open camping.
“We’re grateful to the governor for his motivation and sustained investment in sports development. The team is ready to represent Ebonyi with pride,” Utobo affirmed.
As the National Sports Festival unfolds in Abeokuta, Ebonyi’s athletes carry with them not only their dreams but a clear mandate—let excellence speak.
