The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved a series of new and rescoped road projects worth over N750 billion, with a significant highlight for Ebonyi State — the approval of the Abakaliki–Afikpo flyover at a cost of N25 billion.
Announcing the approvals after the FEC meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu, Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, a former governor of Ebonyi State, stated that the new flyover project is part of efforts to boost connectivity and infrastructure in the Southeast region.
This development is seen as a major win for Ebonyians, especially those commuting between Abakaliki, the state capital, and Afikpo, a key commercial and administrative hub in southern Ebonyi. The flyover is expected to decongest traffic, improve safety, and support economic activities along the axis.
Umahi emphasized that the project aligns with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes infrastructure development across all geopolitical zones. He also noted that Ebonyi State has continued to benefit from strategic federal interventions due to its growing economic relevance and improved accessibility.
While Ebonyi’s project was among the newly approved ones, other states saw the rescoping of ongoing roads due to funding realities. These include the Sokoto-Zamfara-Katsina-Kaduna road, Maiduguri-Monguno road, and the Cham-Numan section of the Gombe-Yola road.
Notably, the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, which affects many travelers from Ebonyi, especially those heading to Onitsha for trade, was awarded for N150 billion, with parts of the work supported by the MTN Nigeria tax credit scheme.
The FEC also approved projects in Ogun, Benue, Kano, Borno, and Lagos states, among others, and adopted policies on electricity, health, marine economy, and ecological interventions.
From road infrastructure to power and health policies, the Council’s latest approvals aim to foster national development — with Ebonyi State clearly not left behind.
