Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has condemned the violent assault on revenue officers overseeing e-ticketing operations in the state. The incident occurred on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at Amudo Market in Ezza South Local Government Area, drawing significant attention to the challenges of enforcing revenue collection systems in the region.
Reports indicate that a group of over 200 armed assailants, allegedly led by Simon Nwifuru, the Youth President of Ezza South, ambushed the enforcement team. Armed with cutlasses and firearms, the attackers barricaded key roads, freed detained motorists, and caused widespread chaos within the market. The incident also involved members of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), who were accompanying the enforcement team.
Governor Nwifuru swiftly condemned the attack, calling it a direct threat to the state’s efforts in strengthening its revenue generation systems. He stressed that such violent acts would not be tolerated and reiterated his commitment to continuing the fight against illegal ticketing operations that have long been a significant challenge for the state’s economy.
“The Ebonyi State government will not tolerate violence aimed at undermining our development initiatives,” said Governor Nwifuru. “We are committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice and ensuring that our revenue collection systems remain secure.”
This attack has highlighted the ongoing issue of illegal ticketing in the state, which has contributed to revenue leakage. Reports suggest that influential figures, including Simon Nwifuru, have ties to sectors such as transportation, exacerbating the challenges of enforcing state policies.
The incident has raised serious concerns about the safety of enforcement officers and the need for more robust security measures in revenue collection. As the state fights to curb illegal ticket sales, the call for greater collaboration between government bodies, security forces, and local communities is becoming increasingly urgent.
Governor Nwifuru’s administration has vowed to push forward with reforms to eliminate corrupt ticketing practices and protect public resources. The investigation into the attack is ongoing, with state authorities pledging to take all necessary steps to restore order and safeguard the safety of enforcement teams.
