Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi, representing Ebonyi North and currently serving as Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate, today led a large-scale empowerment programme that saw thousands of constituents receive both agricultural support and academic funding.
Held at the Abakaliki Local Government headquarters, the event was a mix of celebration, opportunity, and strong political messaging. More than 2,000 farmers gathered in anticipation as the Senator distributed rice seedlings, fertilizers, and herbicides—resources aimed at revitalizing agricultural productivity in the region.
In his address, Senator Nwebonyi encouraged young people to return to the land, emphasizing that sustainable development in Ebonyi begins with agriculture.
“Agriculture is not just a part of our identity—it is our path forward,” he said. “We must move away from waiting endlessly for white-collar jobs and instead harness the wealth in our soil.”
Beyond farming, education was also on the day’s agenda. The Senator announced a ₦50 million scholarship package that will support 225 students across Ebonyi North. The goal, he noted, is to remove financial barriers that delay graduation and hinder students’ ability to contribute meaningfully to society.
“Education is still the greatest equalizer,” he told the cheering beneficiaries. “Take this support seriously, graduate on time, and return to make a difference.”
However, the event wasn’t all about giveaways. In a moment that sparked conversations among attendees, Senator Nwebonyi addressed what he called an emerging culture of disrespect in politics—particularly between male and female politicians.
While reiterating his advocacy for women’s inclusion in governance, he cautioned against what he described as “unfounded disrespect” towards male colleagues.
“I believe in the political advancement of women,” he said, “but when any woman in power begins to insult or demean others—especially in public—it reflects poorly on the cause we’re championing.”
Though he did not mention any specific individuals, his message was unmistakable: leadership, regardless of gender, demands humility and mutual respect.
With this dual intervention in agriculture and education, Senator Nwebonyi continues to position himself as a hands-on representative of the people—combining action with advocacy. Today’s event not only empowered the present generation but also sent a message about the kind of leadership he believes Ebonyi needs: bold, respectful, and deeply rooted in community development.
