Legal representative of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Barrister Ifeanyi Ejiofor, has disclosed that 24 members of the pro-Biafran movement remain incarcerated at the Ebonyi State Correctional Centre, nearly four years after their arrest in May 2021.
Speaking with journalists in Owerri, Ejiofor expressed deep concern over the continued detention of the individuals, even after several High Court rulings acquitting them of all charges. His statement followed the recent release of 12 of the 36 detainees by the Ebonyi State High Court on April 10, 2025.
Ejiofor emphasized that the remaining 24 had been discharged and acquitted on four separate occasions by different judges in Ebonyi, labeling the charges against them as baseless.
“These individuals have been unjustly held despite multiple court verdicts declaring them innocent,” he said. “Their prolonged incarceration is a blatant disregard for the rule of law.”
He further revealed that their next court appearance is scheduled for May 7, 2025, expressing optimism that the remaining detainees will regain their freedom that day.
Reflecting on the earlier release, Ejiofor noted: “On April 10, a significant legal victory was recorded when 12 Biafran activists were freed, following the withdrawal of charges by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in acknowledgment of consistent court rulings in their favor.”
He also confirmed that he personally ensured the safe handover of the released detainees, in full compliance with the court’s directive and the cooperation of correctional authorities.
“Our legal team remains committed to securing justice for the remaining detainees,” he added. “Their freedom is imminent, and we will continue to press until the rule of law is upheld.”
