In a major step toward lasting reconciliation, residents of Iphuigwe in Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State and Ukele in Yala Local Government Area of Cross River State have renewed their commitment to peaceful coexistence. The long-standing boundary dispute between the two communities appears to be nearing resolution as both sides express readiness to welcome displaced families back to their ancestral homes.
The peace advocacy meeting, held on Wednesday, April 17, 2025, in Mfuma, marked the first of its kind in the area. It brought together youth leaders, traditional authorities, and government representatives focused on restoring unity and dialogue.
Representing the Izzi Local Government Chairman, Barr. Emenike Nwakpa, at the meeting was Comrade Obinna Nwedu, Coordinator of the Igbeagu Development Centre. The Chairman of Yala Local Government, however, did not attend and sent no delegate, a development that raised concerns among peace advocates.
Barr. Paschal Nwenyi, who leads the Cross River–Ebonyi Youth Peace Development Movement, emphasized the importance of dialogue and mutual respect in resolving the conflict. Speaking to journalists, he expressed hope that peace is finally achievable after years of hostilities.
“This is a historic gathering—the first of its kind in over two decades,” Nwenyi stated. “It’s unfortunate the Yala chairman wasn’t present, but we plan to meet with him soon to understand why.”
He further appealed to the National Boundary Commission to accelerate the process of establishing a clearly defined boundary between both states, describing it as a key step to avoiding future tensions.
Comrade Obinna Nwedu, speaking on behalf of the Izzi Local Government, reaffirmed the government’s dedication to supporting peacebuilding efforts and encouraged residents of Ukele to remain open to dialogue.
Traditional ruler of Ihigwe Autonomous Community, Eze Clement Eze, also addressed the gathering, commending the recent progress and calling for a swift boundary demarcation to bring a permanent end to the crisis.
As talks continue, stakeholders remain optimistic that both communities can move forward from past grievances and build a more united and peaceful future.
