In a bold move to drive urban renewal and infrastructure development, the Ebonyi State Government has begun demolishing more than 550 buildings across parts of Abakaliki, the state capital. The operation targets unauthorized and structurally unsafe buildings, including residential homes and commercial shops.
According to the State Commissioner for Capital City Development, Mr. Sunday Inyima, the demolition is part of the state’s long-term vision to upgrade Abakaliki into a modern and well-planned city. Key areas affected by the demolition include the Murtala Mohammed Layout, Hausa Quarters, and the Waterworks axis.
The Commissioner stated that several warnings were issued to occupants prior to the commencement of demolition. Initial notices were served as early as November 2023, followed by further reminders in December 2024, advising property owners and residents to vacate the marked structures.
“This exercise is necessary to give way for road expansions, better drainage systems, and the general beautification of our capital,” Inyima explained. “We are committed to enforcing planning laws and ensuring safety in the built environment.”
While the government’s vision for a cleaner, more organized city has been welcomed by some, the decision has stirred concerns among affected residents. Many lament the economic impact and short notice, particularly in light of current economic hardships.
One of the displaced business owners, Mercy Okoro, shared her frustration: “We understand the government wants to make the city better, but this is not the right time. The economy is tough, and we’re barely surviving. Now, we have lost everything.”
Despite public outcry, the state government insists the demolitions are lawful and critical to preventing unregulated development that could pose future risks. Authorities continue to urge developers and landowners to seek proper approvals before initiating construction projects.
As Ebonyi pushes forward with its urban transformation plan, stakeholders are calling for a balance between development and humane resettlement strategies for displaced individuals and businesses.
