Three shops in Ebonyi State have been sealed by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) for selling banned sachet alcoholic beverages.
The enforcement action is part of a nationwide crackdown on the sale and distribution of alcoholic drinks in sachets, PET, and glass bottles of 200ml or less, which were prohibited by NAFDAC in 2023.
Emeka Orajaka, NAFDAC’s Coordinator in Ebonyi, revealed during the exercise that 43 shops were inspected, with three found to be in violation of the ban.
“We conducted raids in marketplaces, motor parks, and plazas, confiscating several banned products. Non-compliant shops were sealed to ensure adherence to the regulations,” Mr. Orajaka stated.
The ban seeks to curb alcohol abuse, particularly among vulnerable groups, due to its harmful health effects, including organ damage, high blood pressure, and weakened immunity.
Mr. Orajaka assured that the enforcement efforts would be sustained and urged the public to steer clear of banned products.
